New VIVA Cataloging Listserv

The increase in purchasing e-books in VIVA has brought the need for more conversation among the member libraries about cataloging issues and best practices. We have created a new VIVA Cataloging Listserv, VIVA-CAT-L, that we hope will be useful to you, especially as we move into the Demand Driven Acquisitions e-book program.

If you would like to be on this listserv, please let me (aelguind@gmu.edu) know and I will add you.

New Products for Spring 2013 - Elsevier & Springer STEM-H E-Book Collections

The Virtual Library of Virginia (VIVA) now offers two premier collections of e-books in STEM-H – Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Health – fields from Elsevier and Springer.

SciVerse Science Direct eBooks from Elsevier and four subject-based e-book collections from Springer will provide VIVA libraries with extensive new resources to support government, business, and educational leaders in their efforts to increase the number of college graduates in STEM-H related fields.

Request for Proposal posted - MLA International Bibliography

VIVA has solicited proposals from qualified sources regarding the Modern Language Association (MLA) International Bibliography. Initial contract shall be for one (1) year with an option to renew for nine (9) additional one year periods.

2013 VIVA Training Fair

VIVA will be hosting 3 regional training sessions which will be held on March 12th, 13th and 14th. Members need only attend one.

Tuesday, March 12, at George Mason University - Arlington campus
Wednesday, March 13 at the University of Richmond
Thursday, March 14 at Radford University

Representatives from Springer, Elsevier, Mergent and a vendor (to be announced) for Demand Driven Acquisition of e-books will be on hand to provide “train the trainer” sessions that are for reference librarians and other user services folks, and are not designed to answer cataloging or other technical implementation questions. The sessions are scheduled to last from 8:30 am to 3:15 pm and lunch will be provided.

New Personal Mileage Rate, effective 1/1/13

Effective January 1, 2013, the Personal Vehicle Usage Mileage Reimbursement Rate increased one cent to $.565/mile in conjunction with an IRS rate change. The Personal Mileage Rate is generally reimbursable when a personal vehicle is used for business travel of less than 100 miles per day. The Fleet Rate of $.246/mile has not changed. Registration Open - VIVA Vendor Demonstrations for DDA

VIVA is convening a Vendor Demonstration Day for the RFP finalists regarding Demand Driven Acquisitions of ebooks. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 13, 2012, in the Student Commons at Virginia Commonwealth University. Finalists will be announced and an agenda will be posted later next week, but representatives from all VIVA member institutions are welcome to attend.

Because space is limited to 100 attendees and catering arrangements need to be made, registration for the event is required and now open. A link to the registration form and details are available on the event’s web page:

Currently there is enough room for each school to send 1 person, and a few schools will be able to send more than 1. If your institution wants to send more than 1 person, we may need to put some folks on a waiting list. If so, please send us a note at viva@gmu.edu and we’ll see what we can do to accommodate.

Please note that we will reimburse all VIVA members (public and private) for their mileage to this meeting, but we do encourage carpooling. If you need to spend the night before the meeting, be sure to get your overnight stay authorized in advance of the meeting. Info about travel is on the web (see the link from the Vendor Demo page) and talk to Liz Wright in the VIVA office if you have specific concerns or questions.
