Heads UP! Major Sprinkler System Work in Fenwick

Significant interior construction work - installing a new sprinkler system on each floor in the existing B&C Wings of Fenwick Library – will take place all summer in Fenwick Library. This new system integrates with the Fenwick Addition and brings the existing Fenwick Library towers into compliance with current building code.

What are they doing in Fenwick? The construction work involves moving furniture, covering book stacks, removing ceiling tiles, installing piping, connecting the sprinklers to fire alarm systems, testing the system, and then replacing the ceiling tiles. The last part of this project is to install a fire suppression system in Special Collections & Archives.

What does this mean for me? Public access to book collections and study rooms/spaces on specific floors in Fenwick Library will be disrupted and will not be permitted as the construction crew works through each floor during the summer. Data Services Lab and staff are temporarily relocated while Floor 1, Wing C is under construction.

How do I get what I need from a closed floor in Fenwick? Library staff will be permitted to access the restricted areas daily to pull books for users. If a user needs a book located in a restricted area, s/he will be instructed to complete an ILLiad document delivery request form.

  • Library staff will pull requested book(s) daily and place the book(s) on hold at Fenwick’s main service desk, and
  • Send an email informing the user when the item is available.
  • Users should also check the Mason Classic Catalog or inPrimo for available e-books.
  • Please note: there will be no access to Special Collections & Archives services or its collections during most of August.

The company’s sprinkler installation plan does not proceed in sequential order from floor to floor and it is possible that unforeseen circumstances may cause delays in the work schedule. Library staff are striving to minimize the impact on library services at Fenwick. We are very grateful for your understanding and cooperation as we proceed through this important project.
