A poster from Mason Libraries’ Special Collections and Archives is featured on the cover of the November 2009 issue of College & Research Libraries News (published by the Association of College & Research Libraries).
The poster image announces the 1977 East German “Children’s Film Week” in the District of Gera, which was a part of the former German Democratic Republic. The Deutsche Film–Aktiengesellschaft (DEFA), the only film company in East Germany during its existence, produced the films for the event. The festival was sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Education.
Mason Libraries’ GDR Poster Archive collection includes more than 7,000 posters from East German art, film, dance, music, political, and theater organizations. For more information on Special Collections & Archives holdings, visit sca.gmu.edu.

Campus Technology has recognized Mason Libraries with its 2009 Campus Technology Innovators Award! From a field of 349 nominations from colleges and universities around the country and the world, the Libraries’ Research Portals Project was selected as an exemplary technology innovation that benefits teaching, learning and research.
The Research Portals Project successfully blends open source software products with library research resources to create a “one stop” gateway for Mason researchers. The portals also serve as vehicles for collaboration and community between Mason’s Liaison Librarians (link) and researchers. “We’re reinventing the way librarians interact with faculty, meeting our audience where they are: on the web,” according to project leader Wally Grotophorst, Associate University Librarian, Digital Programs & Services.
The ongoing Research Portal Project is led by Grotophorst and involves Liaison Librarians on all Mason campuses. To learn more about University Libraries’ Research Portal Project, contact your Liaison Librarian or Wally Grotophorst (wallyg@gmu.edu).

Jennifer Barnes Bowie, assistant professor of government and politics in the Department of Public and International Affairs, is the 2009-10 Fenwick Fellow. The announcement was made by University Librarian John Zenelis.
Professor Bowie’s research project is titled “Explaining Decision Making on the United States Courts of Appeals: Do Circuit Courts of Appeals Judges Fear Reversal from their Circuit En Banc?”. She intends to determine under what conditions federal circuit courts of appeals judges are concerned by reversal from their circuit en banc, meaning when all judges of the court hear the case. Bowie will present the results of her work in a public lecture sponsored by the Libraries in the fall or spring of the 2010-11 academic year.
The Fenwick Fellowship is awarded annually to a Mason tenured or tenure-track faculty member to pursue a research project that uses and enhances the University Libraries’ resources while advancing knowledge in his or her field. The fellowship is recommended by a six-member selection committee comprising three instructional faculty members and three librarians. Fenwick Fellows receive use of a furnished office in Fenwick Library and an award of $5,000 to support the research project.
