Come and learn about Open Access in action at Mason as the Mason Libraries celebrate Open Access Week, October 19-23, 2009. This international event draws attention to the benefits of making the latest research available to all via the Web — free. A practice gaining momentum throughout the world, Open Access (OA) promotes sharing knowledge for the public good without barriers.
The highlight of the Libraries’ week-long showcase is a presentation about copyright options that allow authors to retain specific publishing rights for the purpose of increasing the availability and impact of their research worldwide. Join your colleagues to hear Madelyn Wessel, Associate General Counsel, University of Virginia speak on “Author’s Rights, Publishers, and Open Access: Why You Should Read That Contract!” This event will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 21, Edwin Meese Conference Room, Mason Hall, Fairfax Campus. Discussion and refreshments provided!
Want to learn more about the Libraries’ Open Access programs and projects? Stop by the Open Access kiosk in the Johnson Center Atrium (or on the North Plaza, weather permitting) during OA Week. Representatives from the Copyright Resources Office, Mason Archival Repository Service (MARS), and University Dissertation and Thesis Services (UDTS) will be available to answer questions and distribute information about OA, publishing in refereed OA journals, and depositing your work in MARS. The kiosk hours are Noon – 2:00 pm, October 20-22. You can also visit the OA Week wiki or contact Claudia Holland (chollan3@gmu.edu).

Jennifer Barnes Bowie, assistant professor of government and politics in the Department of Public and International Affairs, is the 2009-10 Fenwick Fellow. The announcement was made by University Librarian John Zenelis.
Professor Bowie’s research project is titled “Explaining Decision Making on the United States Courts of Appeals: Do Circuit Courts of Appeals Judges Fear Reversal from their Circuit En Banc?”. She intends to determine under what conditions federal circuit courts of appeals judges are concerned by reversal from their circuit en banc, meaning when all judges of the court hear the case. Bowie will present the results of her work in a public lecture sponsored by the Libraries in the fall or spring of the 2010-11 academic year.
The Fenwick Fellowship is awarded annually to a Mason tenured or tenure-track faculty member to pursue a research project that uses and enhances the University Libraries’ resources while advancing knowledge in his or her field. The fellowship is recommended by a six-member selection committee comprising three instructional faculty members and three librarians. Fenwick Fellows receive use of a furnished office in Fenwick Library and an award of $5,000 to support the research project.

Applications for the 2009-10 Fenwick Fellow program are being accepted through Friday, April 24. For academic year 2009-2010, one fellowship will be awarded. The competition is open to all tenured and tenure-track faculty members at George Mason. The selection of the Fellow will be announced by the end of this academic year.
The Fenwick Fellow program is intended to assist research by faculty members as well as enhance the collections of the University Libraries. The fellowship provides a $5,000 award for research materials and assistance, along with an office in the Fenwick Library.
Fellows are encouraged to allocate approximately half the award for acquisition of books, journals or multimedia materials, which will be added to the libraries’ permanent collection. The following year after the fellowship is completed, during the spring semester, the Libraries will sponsor a public Fenwick Fellow lecture.
Applicants should submit a brief proposal and curriculum vitae, including information about the applicant’s current position, teaching, and research responsibilities at Mason. The proposals should contain a short project summary and information about the central problem to be addressed, the applicant’s previous work in the general area, research methodologies to be used, the need for research space in the library, budget of specific materials and/or services to be purchased with the award, and expected results of the fellowship.
A selection committee composed of six members (three faculty members and three librarians) will review the applications. One research proposal will be selected and recommended to the University Librarian. Complete application instructions are contained within the program guidelines. Questions? Contact Debra Hogan (dhogan1@gmu.edu) in the University Librarian’s office or call 703/993-2491.
